BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - St. Thomas (11-1) split a pair of matches Saturday at the NAIA Southeastern Challenge. The Bobcats swept Bryan College (4-4) in straight sets 26-24, 25-9, 25-20. Earlier in the day, STU lost for the first time this season to no. 7 ranked Georgetown College (6-2) 27-25, 25-17, 25-18.
St. Thomas finished with a 3-1 mark at the NAIA Southeastern Challenge which featured seven of the top NAIA volleyball teams in the southeast. The event welcomed teams from the Southern States Athletic Conference, The Sun Conference, the Mid-South Conference and the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
In the win over Bryan,
Shanotta Bawek recorded a game-high 16 kills, while setters
Dana Nowaczyk and
Kimberly Martino each dished out 19 assists.
Whitney Battoe led all players with 12 digs to go along with nine kills.
In the first set vs. Bryan, the Bobcats and Lions battled into extra time with STU prevailing 26-24. St. Thomas then put together a dominant 25-9 second set win before putting away the match with a 25-20 third set victory.
STU fell to seventh ranked Georgetown in the earlier match, snapping a ten-match winning streak for the Bobcats. St. Thomas is now 1-1 this year vs. ranked opponents having defeated no. 2 Missouri Baptist last weekend in Miami Gardens.
Against Georgetown, Battoe led the Bobcats with eight kills, while
Marisa Markus added seven kills. Nowaczyk led STU with 19 assists.
St. Thomas returns to action on September 10 with The Sun Conference opener at Southeastern in Lakeland, Fla.
