STU CAPS OFF PERFECT CONFERENCE REGULAR SEASON

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – For the first time in school history, 15th ranked St. Thomas (11-1-1, 9-0-0 TSC) went undefeated in Sun Conference play capped off by a 4-1 victory over SCAD Savannah (7-8-0, 5-4-0 TSC) in the regular-season finale held on a soggy Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Field.  The Bobcats, who had already clinched the Sun Conference regular season championship for the first time since 2012, completed their conference regular season with a perfect 9-0 record.

With a perfect 9-0 record in conference play, the Bobcats dominated their competition all season long.  STU outscored its conference opponents 35-3 in the regular season with six shutouts.

On Saturday, Federico Moronell and Pablo Gill led the Bobcats with a combined 11 points.  Moronell scored two goals and recorded two assists to set up Gill's two goals.  Gill returned the favor with an assist to Moronell to cap off the scoring.

Moronell, who earlier this season was named the NAIA Player of the Week, now has a team-best 14 goals and two assists for a total of 30 points which also leads the team.  Gill now has seven goals and five assists for a total of 19 points, third best on the team.

The game's first goal came on a short, precise pass by Moronell to Gil who eluded the goalkeeper for the Bees to score on an open net.  SCAD-Savannah would tie the match at 1-1 on a goal in the 11th minute. The match would remain tied until the final minute of the first half when Moronell blasted a ball deflected off the keeper and to Gill who found the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.

In the second half, Moronell took it upon himself to beat a Bee defender, then win a one-on-one situation vs. SCAD's keeper to give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead in the 59th minute.  Moronell would strike again for an insurance goal in the 68th minute off a cross by Gil.

The defense and goalkeeping play continued to be superb for the Bobcats on Saturday as STU allowed just one goal on six shots.

In the nine regular-season conference games, the Bobcats only allowed three goals while posting six shutouts.  STU never allowed more than one goal in a single conference game, averaging 0.333 goals allowed per conference game.  Goalkeepers Connor Christie and Robert Barton have combined for the six shutouts.  The two goalies have earned three Sun Conference Player of the Week Awards this season.

Starting defenders Santeri Bergman, Harry Molyneux, Christian Giraldo, and Spiridon Karidis along with Chris Valdes and Abraham Bibas have led the defense all year and in many cases made life easy for Christie and Barton allowing just 16 shots on goal in the nine conference games.

In total, the Bobcats have earned eight Conference Player of the Week awards this season, to go along with Moronell's NAIA National Player of the Week award.

With 15:40 to play in the second half, the match was called due to weather and field conditions, sparking a Bobcat celebration for the first perfect conference record in school history.

As regular season champions, St. Thomas will enter The Sun Conference Tournament as the number one seed and receive a bye through the quarterfinals.  STU will host a semifinal on Tuesday, November 7, then with a win in the semis will host the championship finals on Friday, November 10.
