DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - 11th seed St. Thomas (14-1-2) fell to no. 6 seed Mobile (16-3-2) 4-2 in penalty kicks in the Second Round of the NAIA National Championships held Tuesday evening at the Seacrest Soccer Complex. The two teams played to a 3-3 tie through regulation and two overtime periods before Mobile took the victory in a penalty kick shootout.
Konstantinos Mylonas scored two goals and
Tomas Greco scored one goal for the Bobcats, while
Santeri Bergman,
Santiago Dirrocco, and
Federico Moronell registered assists.
STU opened the match with an offensive flurry as
Federico Moronell struck a spectacular scissors kick that was saved beautifully by Mobile's goalkeeper. Just minutes later,
Romario Atkinson made a strong overlapping run deep into Mobile's territory. Atkinson then crossed the ball to Moronell who made a solid shot on goal on a diving header.
Two minutes later, the Bobcats found the back of the net as Mylonas chipped a ball into the far corner of the net. The goal was initially credited to Moronell, yet was credited to Mylonas upon further review by the official scorer.
The score remained 1-0 throughout the first half as the Bobcat defense of
Santeri Bergman,
Harry Molyneux,
Christian Giraldo and Atkinson shut down their opponents, not allowing a shot through the first 40 minutes of the match.
With a 1-0 lead coming out of halftime, the Bobcats added to their lead with the second goal of the contest by Mylonas on an assist by Dirrocco. In the 50th minute, Mylonas fired a volley off of Dirrocco's cross that proved to be unstoppable by the Ram goalkeeper. It marked the 12th goal of the season for Mylonas and the fifth assist of the year for Dirrocco.
Just a minute later, the Rams answered with a goal that cut STU's lead in half. In the 63rd minute, the Rams struck again with the equalizer to tie the match 2-2.
In the 69th minute,
Tomas Greco created an opportunity for the Bobcats to take a lead with a brilliant move followed by a shot that just missed hitting the near post and resulting in a goal kick for the Rams. The Rams countered with an opportunity of their own just minutes later, but Atkinson came up big on the defensive end with a sliding tackle just in front of the goal.
With less than 11 minutes to play, the Rams scored the go-ahead goal to put the Bobcats down 3-2 with time running out.
After a shot by
Jon Quintana just sailed over the cross bar, the Bobcats continued to apply offensive pressure. A set piece opportunity deep in Mobile territory with less than seven minutes to play provided the answer.Â
Santeri Bergman provided a throw-in that Moronell was able to flick on to Greco who delivered the equalizer with 6:46 left in regulation. Bergman and Moronell were credited with a double-assist, while Greco scored his seventh goal of the season.
The score remained tied at 3-3 for the final minutes of the second half, sending the match into overtime.
Neither team could create much offense as the two teams remained tied through the two overtime periods. A defensive battle resulted in a 3-3 tie after 110 minutes of play forcing a penalty kick tiebreaker.
Fabian Heinrich and Mylonas each made penalty kicks, yet the Rams made all four of their PK's to take the win.
The Bobcats conclude their most successful season in program history, going 14-1-2 and capturing Sun Conference regular season and tournament championships. The second round finish marked the furthest the St. Thomas Men's Soccer team had ever advanced in the NAIA National Championships.
