AVE MARIA, Fla- No. 12 St. Thomas (6-2, 3-0 TSC) swept its Sun Conference doubleheader against Ave Maria (6-4, 0-3 TSC) on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats took game one, 8-1, and rolled to a 13-2 victory in game two. STU was also able to complete a three-game sweep of the Gyrenes over the weekend.
In the opener,
Orlando Rodriguez had a dominant performance, working seven innings, striking out nine. He scattered four hits and allowed one run. Rodriguez picked up his second win in as many starts.
The Bobcats got off to an early two-run lead after a
Randy Oliva double scored two runs. In the fourth inning,
German Morales scored on a single by
Orlando Rivera, and
Nick Canino scored on a throwing error to go ahead 4-0. In the eighth inning, STU pushed across four runs to put the Gyrenes away.
There was a similar theme in game two, as
Kenny Roder picked up where
Orlando Rodriguez left off. Roder was perfect through four innings, retiring the first 12 hitters he faced. The left-hander went six innings, striking out eight. He held the Gyrene batters to three hits and two runs. Roder picked up his first win as a Bobcat. Both starting pitchers posted quality starts in their outings.
The offense exploded for 11 runs through five innings, highlighted by two RBI-hits from
Kendrick Gutierrez,
German Morales, and
Randy Oliva – who blasted a two-run home run. STU plated two more runs in the ninth inning for a final score of 13-2.
Next up for the Bobcats is a home matchup against DII Barry University on Tuesday, February 14 at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
