MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In day two of the NAIA Southeastern Challenge, the St. Thomas (3-1) ended up splitting a doubleheader; winning the first game 13-3 over No. 4 Tennessee Wesleyan (0-2), but dropped the second game to No. 2 Faulkner University (3-0) Saturday afternoon.
The weekend went well for the Bobcats going 2-1 over the No. 6 and No. 4 teams in the NAIA.
In the game one victory today against No. 4 Tennessee Wesleyan, STU continued their early season trend of offensive explosion and great pitching.
Michael Centeno and
German Morales hit home runs, leading the team to a 13-run day.
Randy Oliva drove in two runs and scored three, as well.
On the pitching side, starter
Orlando Rodriguez took the mound for the first time as a Bobcat and picked up the win. Rodriguez compiled seven strikeouts in five innings of work, giving up three runs.
Andrew Denis worked three innings, including back-to-back crucial shutdown innings in which he stranded multiple Bulldog runners.
Jose Pupo worked a scoreless ninth, picking up two strikeouts.
In the second game Saturday, the Bobcats fell short to No. 2 Faulkner University. Starter
Kenny Roder gave up a three-run home run in the top of the first inning, but STU quickly responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The Bobcats tied the game up at three in the fifth inning, but the Eagles had an answer when Tra'Mayne Holmes hit a home run to make it 4-3. That was all Faulkner needed, as the final score of the game remained 4-3.
On Friday, STU defeated No. 6 Lindsey Wilson 13-1.
St. Thomas will head back to Florida and gear up to play Division II Nova Southeastern on Tuesday, February 7 at 6 p.m. at NSU Baseball Complex.
