LAKE WALES, Fla. –St. Thomas (26-10, 10-5 TSC) swept a doubleheader Saturday over host Warner (17-22, 3-9 TSC) to win the weekend conference series. STU won the first game 7-1, then took game two 4-3 in 10 innings.
In the first game of the doubleheader, STU's
Erne Valdes and
Andrew Denis combined to allow just three hits by the Royals. Valdes improved to 7-1 on the season after allowing just one run on one hit through seven innings. Denis pitched two shutout innings, allowing just two hits and walking none.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first inning before adding runs in the second and third. STU added to its lead, taking a 6-1 lead into the ninth when
Michael Centeno hit his team-best 13th home run of the season.
James Spatafora went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI, a walk and two runs scored, while
Kendrick Gutierrez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks.
In game two of the day, the Bobcats and Royals played to a 3-3 tie through nine innings to send the game into extra innings. In the top of the tenth,
David Palenzuela drew a walk then was pinch-run for by
Jose Brito. Spatafora then hit an RBI-double to score Brito for the go-ahead run.
Denis closed out the 10th inning to earn the win. Denis, who entered the game in the ninth, pitched two innings, allowing no runs and two hits.
Chris Rodriguez started the game for the Bobcats and went eight innings, allowing three runs on four hits.
On the day, Spatafora was 5-7 with two doubles, two RBI, four walks and two runs scored. Denis pitched four shutout innings in relief across the two games.
The Bobcats return to action with a game at NCAA Division II Palm Beach Atlantic on Tuesday in West Palm Beach before returning home for a three-game conference series vs. Webber International starting 6 p.m. Friday at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
