MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- St. Thomas (16-7) took down College of Saint Joseph (5-9) by a score of 10-0 on Tuesday night, ending in the seventh inning, to complete the full-game shut-out, the fourth of the season for the Bobcats.
From beginning to end St. Thomas dominated in this game, making sure their voices were heard early on.
It didn't take long for the Bobcats to break the 0-0 scoreline. At the bottom of the first came a powerful at bat from
Randy Oliva, a single up the middle, which brought in two early runs for STU as Gutierrez and
Michael Centeno crossed home plate. Immediately after, a sacrifice fly from
James Spatafora brought in yet another run. It was a high numerical inning for the Bobcats as the final line for the bottom of the first inning read six runs, six hits, one error and two LOB.
The second inning brought a stronger defensive presence from the Fighting Saints, as they looked to bounce back from a difficult first. The Bobcats were held scoreless in both the second and third innings, but quickly fragmented the score, scoring two runs off of two perfectly hit balls, one by Oliva and the other by
Michael Sanchez.
After a rough four innings, the fight was clearly out of the Fighting Saints as the fifth inning brought two more runs for the Bobcats, which ultimately matched the run-rule 10-run deficit to end the game at the bottom of the seventh.
Defensively for St. Thomas,
Chris Rodriguez finished his night with 6 IP, 2 H, 2 BB and 6 K off of 20 AB and 22 BF.
Big hitters for the Bobcats were
Kendrick Gutierrez who went 3-for-5, scored two runs, hit two doubles and earned one RBI while
Randy Oliva went for a perfect 2-for-2 on the night, scoring two runs and bringing home three RBI.
Next up for St. Thomas is game six of the STU Invitational, as the Bobcats will play host to Felician for the third and final meeting between the teams on March 8 at 6 p.m. at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
Be sure to come out as STU looks to take the rubber match!
