Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas (3-1, 1-0 TSC) opened up Sun Conference play with a win against Ave Maria (1-4-1, 0-1 TSC) on Wednesday night by a shut out score of 4-0 under the lights at Bobcat Field.
This match would mark the first match played by STU since the landfall of Hurricane Irma, but the form and the playing style of the Bobcats was superb.
St. Thomas opened up the scoring early, as
Federico Moronell, who earlier this season was named NAIA National Player of the Week, wasted no time. After the opening whistle, Moronell netted his goal as a mere 75 seconds had gone by before he took out a couple defenders to send a shot to the back of the net. This marked his seventh goal on the season in just four games.
The second goal for the Bobcats came off the foot of
Konstantinos Mylonas, as his third goal of the season would come in the 51st minute, while
Chris Giraldo tallied his first assist on the year. An absolute screamer to the top bin gave the team a 2-0 lead.
A half hour later, St. Thomas would add to its lead as
Pablo Gill earned his first goal of the season. A bad pass from the AMU defender landed at the feet of Gill who then placed the ball in the net in the 80th minute.
The Spaniard Gill assisted
Pedro Silva as he netted the fourth and final goal after he took out the goalkeeper to close out the scoring detail for the Bobcats.
Robert Barton, the starting goalkeeper for the Bobcats, was perfect on the night and remains perfect on the season, improving to 3-0 to go along with his first clean sheet of the year. One brilliant save kept the net empty on the night as Barton helped the Bobcats take a defensive stand and close out the first conference game with a win.
Next up for St. Thomas is a weekend match up against conference opponents Warner at home on Saturday, September 23 at 7 p.m.
