MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (14-7, 10-1 TSC) continued its hot play in The Sun Conference with a 74-55 win over Thomas Univ. (6-12, 2-10 TSC) on Thursday evening at the Fernandez Family Center.
With the win, the Bobcats have now won 10 of 11 games in The Sun Conference and 13 of their last 15 games overall.
Katie Rienas scored a career-high 27 points to lead all scorers. The career high eclipses her previous career-best of 26 points (twice - vs. Talladega, 12/30/17, vs. Univ. Virgin Islands, 1/17/18). Rienas shot 11-of-17 from the field, hitting two three-pointers from beyond the arc. It marked the seventh game this season that Rienas has scored 20 or more points in a game. She also registered four steals, four rebounds and two assists to complement the career night scoring.
Samara Auguste, the reigning Sun Conference Player of the Week, continued her productive play with 15 points, hitting 7-of-8 free throws. Auguste also pulled down four rebounds and, dished out four assists and swiped two steals.
Ebony Griffin also scored in double digits with 11 points to go along with five rebounds. Kristina Bugarski scored nine points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Keiana Brooks added none points on an efficient 4-of-5 shooting from the field.
The Bobcats controlled the game throughout the final three quarters, leading by as many as 25 points midway through the fourth quarter.
The first quarter was tight early and the Night Hawks cut the lead to one point with just under two minutes to play in the opening period. The Bobcats then went on a 7-0 run, all scored by Auguste to take a 21-13 lead after one. In the second quarter, finished the period with an 8-0 run capped off by a jumper by Griffin to give STU a 44-25 lead at intermission.
The margin remained around 20 points in the third quarter leading up to a hot start to the fourth quarter by Rienas who scored seven straight points capped off by a three-pointer from downtown to give her the career-high scoring output.
St. Thomas will look to continue its hot play in Sun Conference play with a home game vs. Coastal Georgia 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Fernandez Family Center. The game has been designated the Sun Conference Game of the Week.
