MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas (0-2) dropped both games of a season-opening doubleheader to Barry in windy conditions Friday night at Jacquelin J. Kelly Field.
Barry won the first game 11-3 after jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Bobcats reponded with three runs in the bottom of the first as
Melody Grafals led off with a single up the middle. Grafals then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nanet Manieri and an error by the Buccaneer defense.
Alexa Spellman walked to load the bases, then Alliya Sands drew an RBI walk that scored Grafals. Two more runs scored later in the inning for the Bobcats as Sands and Spellman each scored on a play where
Michelle Murch reached second on an error.
In the fifth inning, Manieri hit her first triple as a member of the Bobcats. However, the game ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
The second game went in the favor of the Buccaneers throughout with Barry winning 13-0, also in five innings.
Following a scrimmage at Broward College on Feb. 3, the Bobcats return to regular season action with a trip to California beginning March 3 with a game vs. Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif.
