MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (9-6, 7-0 TSC) came from behind with an explosive fourth quarter to defeat Warner (8-9, 1-6 TSC) 67-63 and remain undefeated in Sun Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Fernandez Family Center.
Katie Rienas led the Bobcats in the comeback, scoring a game-high 21 points with 14 of her points coming in the dramatic fourth quarter. Kristina Bugarski scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Ebony Griffin scored nine points to go along with eight boards and four steals.
Samara Auguste led the Bobcats with five assists and added four steals. Chakari Merritt delivered with eight points and five rebounds, while Janelle Silver pulled down six boards as well.
The Bobcats trailed for most of the contest, falling behind 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and trailing 33-27 at halftime. The deficit became even more daunting after the third period as the Royals outscored the Bobcats 20-12 in the quarter to take 53-39 lead into the fourth.
The Bobcats not only came alive in the fourth quarter, but dominated the final period of both sides of the ball. STU outscored WU 28-10 in the final quarter, including scoring runs of 12-0 and 8-0 to take the victory.
STU trailed 57-43 with seven minutes to play, but went on a 12-0 run sparked by a three-pointer by Bugarski and concluding with two free throws by Rienas that cut the deficit to 57-55. After a Warner bucket extended the lead to four points, a three-pointer by Rienas made the score 59-58 with two minutes to play.
In the final minute, Rienas would go on to hit two free throws to give the Bobcats their first lead since the opening moments of the game at 60-59. A steal by Silver would lead more points by Rienas on a fast break and extend STU's lead to three points. Rienas would hit two more free throws to give STU its biggest lead of the game at five points.
Silver and Bugarski would also hit free throws down the stretch to ice the game for the Bobcats.
St. Thomas returns to action on Thursday with a game vs. no. 3 ranked Southeastern in a matchup of the only two undefeated teams in the Sun Conference. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Fernandez Family Center.
