NORTH MIAMI, FLA. – St. Thomas University Volleyball (8-12, 7-5 TSC) matched their season-long winning streak with their fourth consecutive win on Saturday afternoon against Sun Conference opponent, Johnson & Wales (8-17, 1-12 TSC). STU defeated JWU in straight sets (25-18, 25-12, 25-17).
The opening set of the Sun Conference match-up between the crosstown rivals, saw the Bobcats needing to mount a comeback early. STU was trailing 0-6, following three consecutive service aces by the Wildcats before a
Victoria Philpot kill got the Bobcats on the board. Philpot got the offense rolling, as STU was able to win four of the next five points to bring cut the deficit in half at 4-7. STU claimed their first lead of the set after a
Courtney White kill gave the Bobcats a 10-9 lead. The senior gave St. Thomas all the momentum the team needed, as the team never forfeited the lead and cruised to a 25-18 set victory.
Following the first set victory, STU looked to maintain their surge of momentum into the second set. St. Thomas led 8-6 over JWU before an
Arianna Bolinger kill started an eight-point rally for the Bobcats to break the game open at 16-6,
Nathaly Alvarez recorded a service ace to finish the rally. The Bobcats continued to rally, recording four-consecutive points, highlighted by
Krista Kolbinskie's service ace and kill, to keep the STU lead at 10-points. St. Thomas dominated the entire second set, en route to a 25-12 set win and a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set of the match, once again the Bobcats were able to ride their momentum to the crucial Sun Conference victory. STU led 7-5, following an additional Kolbinskie kill, and steadily built a lead with consistent attacks and solid defense. St. Thomas was able to capitalize off several Wildcat errors to extend the lead to 20-14 over JWU, when
Nathaly Alvarez showed her versatility and notched a kill. The match ended the same way it began for the Bobcats, as Philpot recorded the first-and-final kill of the match to seal the Sun Conference sweep with a 25-17 victory.
St. Thomas currently sits in 5
th place as the Sun Conference tournament quickly approaches, with four matches remaining.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Wednesday, October 24
th against Florida Memorial University with the match scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
