MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. -Â The St. Thomas University Women's Soccer team (7-6-1, 4-5-1 TSC) defeated SCAD-Savannah (6-9, 3-5 TSC) 3-1 in the Sun Conference and regular season finale on Senior Day from Bobcat Field.
Prior to the match, St. Thomas University Athletics honored eight senior class members:
Andrea Capecchi,
Kylie Braeseke,
Kortney Hinden,
Celina Pou,
Amanda Gordon, Eva Castaño Candela,
Sarah Adams and
Michaela Kopecki.
STU started the match aggressive, recording four shots within the first 30-minutes of the match. The Bobcats best scoring opportunity of the half, came from Castaño Candela in the 30
th minute, as the senior's shot hit the cross-bar.
St. Thomas had five-shots in the first-half of the match, compared to SCAD's three. The two club's defensives shut-down each other as the teams remained scoreless after 45-minutes.
The match stayed at 0-0, until a Bobcats foul in the box led to a Bees penalty-kick in the 61
st minute. Hannah Amidon beat St. Thomas goalkeeper,
Veronica Gonzalez, to the right-side and STU found themselves trailing 1-0. The possession for St. Thomas immediately following the penalty-kick, was led by Captain,
Andrea Manzur, and Katharina Jüllich. Jüllich crossed the ball inside-the-box to Manzur as the captain netted the equalizer, with her fifth goal of the season.
With the match tied at 1-1, Castaño Candela took over the match for STU, as the senior gave St. Thomas their first lead of the match in the 77
th minute, following an assist from
Nicole Maribona on a throw-in, for Candela's team-leading 10
th goal of the season.
Just seven minutes later, Candela once again beat the defense, recording her 11
th goal and second of the match to extend the Bobcats lead to 3-1 over the Bees. Candela's second goal was assisted by fellow senior,
Kylie Braeseke.
This afternoon's match concluded the regular season for St. Thomas University, as the Women's Soccer team finished the season, playing their best soccer of the season. STU won each of their last three-matches by a combined score of 15-4.
The Bobcats will await the outcome of two University of South Carolina-Beaufort matches to see if the Sun Conference tournament remains a possibility.
Overall, St. Thomas finished the regular season with a (7-6-1, 4-5-1 TSC) record, with Eva Castaño Candela leading the offense, netting 11-goals in 14-matches.
