MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The third seeded St. Thomas University Men's Soccer team (7-7-2, 6-1-2 TSC) concluded their season on Saturday night in The Sun Conference Quarterfinal match against the sixth seeded Johnson & Wales University Wildcats (9-6-0, 5-4-0 TSC). The Bobcats fell 3-2 on the rainy night at Bobcat Field.
Â
A game that started with clear skies and perfect weather set for the night took a turn for the worse as the rain started pouring down. The Bobcats battled through tough playing weather, a puddled filled field, and the wild blowing against them. It kept the game knotted at one through the half as play was standstill partly due to the fact that the ball had trouble finding itself to successfully move through the other side of the field.
Â
The skies were able to clear up during the second half as the action kicked up a notch. Johnson & Wales netted the first goal in the 49
th minute as a result of Bobcat miscue between the last defender and keeper. STU was able to even the game with a goal of their own during the 53
rd minute as
Luis Stalin Munoz took a left footed strike and the ball spun around the diving keeper for the Wildcats.
Â
Tough play continued as the Wildcats were able to once again get on top with a 30-yard strike that found the back of the net. The resilient Bobcats came back to score in the 78
th minute as a NAIA Top Play worthy bicycle kick into the back of the net from freshmen,
Itay Forkosh, that tied the match.
Â
Unfortunately, it would not be enough for the Bobcats as they had to play a man down and would ultimately drop the match on a penalty kick in the 87
th minute.
Â
A great defensive showing by the line consisted of
Harry Molyneux,
Frank Long,
George Koutsopodiotis, and
Matheus Louly Caixe was not enough to hold down the Wildcats in this quarterfinal match.
Â
STU finished the 2018 season right where they started at Bobcat Field. The STU Athletic department thanks the team for a great year and best wishes to all future endeavors down the road.
