MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- St. Thomas (19-7, 15-1 TSC) took care of business against conference opponent Webber International (9-18, 3-13 TSC) to extend its win streak to 10 straight games. The final score on Saturday afternoon at the Fernandez Family Center read 80-65.
Along with the 10-game win streak, the Bobcats have also won 14 of the last 15 games.
STU recognized three seniors on the team as
Katie Rienas (Senior),
Kristina Bugarski (Graduate) and
Janelle Silver (Graduate) played key roles in the Bobcat win.
Graduate student Kristina Bugarski.
Of the three seniors, headlining the afternoon for St. Thomas was Rienas who struck early in the game. It was in the first quarter in which she swished both of her threes of the game. She helped run and open the floor throughout the remainder of the game as she scored 17 points. She was not only recognized as a senior, but she also received an award for having reached the 1,000-point club. She currently stands at 1,037 points after her 17 on the day.
Bugarski also had a wonderful performance in the game as she and Rienas were sensational all day. In the first quarter, like her Senior companion, she drained three shots from beyond the arc. It was an incredible showing from the Bobcats in the first quarter but it was a near unstoppable execution by the Serbian native. She closed out her game with 16 points.
Graduate student Janelle Silver.
Silver proved herself to be a defensive force as she picked up seven boards, all of them coming on the defensive front. While helping create space on the floor, she was able to assist on two occasions.
The majority of the game had STU up, which at one point totaled a double-digit lead of 21 points. Webber showed some fight as they were able to bring it within 10 points late in the fourth.
St. Thomas showed true command of the game as they closed out the conference battle with the Warriors by a final score of 80-65.
As a team, STU capitalized off of turnovers (30 points) as well as the fast break (18 points) were scored.
Notable numbers for the Bobcats came from
Samara Auguste who scored a team-high 19 points, while she stole a game-high six times and assisted on five occasions.
Ebony Griffin earned her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Next up for St. Thomas is a road conference matchup against Ave Maria on Thursday, February 15 at 5:30 p.m.
