BOBCATS DROP TSC DH SHOWDOWN AGAINST SOUTHEASTERN

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- St. Thomas (1-12, 0-4 TSC) dropped a pair of home weekend conference games on Saturday afternoon against Southeastern (23-10, 2-2 TSC) at Jacquelin J. Kelly Field. SEU won game one 8-5 and the second 11-2.

In the first game, the Bobcats opened up the first inning with a hitting brigade. Melody Grafals opened the offense for STU as she nearly hit one over the wall. A strong double was followed by a GiGi Santos single, which helped setup the scoring opportunity for senior Jamie Gonzalez. A line drive single right down the middle gave Gonzalez her two RBI of the game.

As all seemed to be going well for the Bobcats until a tough fourth inning had the Fire bring in six runs to take a 6-3 lead over St. Thomas.

STU showed signs of life in the fifth inning as Alliyah Sands hit a soft floater into right field, but it was not enough as SEU would power through and take control.

With one out on the board in the seventh inning, the Bobcats showed some fight. With Grafals back at the plate, she earned her third hit on her fourth at bat in the form of a single. The very next batter, Santos, hit a single herself to put runners on first and second. Sands came up to bat and knocked a spiraling ball into right field to earn a double and a RBI. Gonzalez brought in the final STU run with a ground out RBI.

Both STU and SEU would score two runs a piece in the final three innings of the game as SEU took the first game of the double header, 8-5.

Notable numbers in the first game came from Grafals, who went 3-for-4, which included a double, with two runs and one RBI. Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with three RBI. Sands recorded a double on her 2-for-4 hitting with one RBI registered.

Pitcher Jennifer Acevedo was effective in relief in game two, pitching two innings with one unearned run on four hits. At the plate in game two, Gonzalez and Sands each went 2-for-3 with Gonzalez adding two RBI.

The second game had the Bobcats down from beginning to end as the Fire were unstoppable, taking down STU by run-rule in five innings.

Next up for St. Thomas is an away double header conference matchup against the University of South Carolina Beaufort on Thursday, March 22 at 2/4 p.m.
