BRUNSWICK, Ga.. - St. Thomas won the first game of a Sun Conference doubleheader on Saturday, defeating host Coastal Georgia 4-2. In the second game of the twin bill, CCG topped STU by an identical score of 4-2 as the teams split the doubleheader.
Jennifer Acevedo was sensational on the mound to earn the win, pitching 6.1 shutout innings. Acevedo allowed just five hits in the effort, while striking out three Coastal Georgia batters.
In game one of the doubleheader, St. Thomas came back from a 2-0 deficit to score four consecutive runs to take the victory.  The rally began in the third inning as
Michelle Murch led off with a walk, then stole both second and third base. With Murch at third,
Melody Grafals then hit a well-struck sacrifice fly to left field to score Murch and cut CCG's lead in half.
Trailing 2-1, the Bobcats tied the score in the top of the fourth by once again using the stolen base as a weapon. With two out,
Nanet Manieri singled through the left side of the infield. Manieri then stole third base with
McKenna Delaware at the plate. Delware then delivered with a RBI-single up the middle to score Manieri and tie the game 2-2.
The score remained tied through the next two innings leading up to some dramatics in the top of the seventh. Manieri led off the inning, reaching base via a hit by pitch. Manieri then advanced to second on a wild pitch, then to third on a ground out by Delaware. That brought
Alexis Castroman to the plate. Castroman put the ball into play which led to a wild sequence of events that included a throwing error by the Coastal Georgia catcher. On the play, Manieri scored as did Castroman on what became the equivalent to an inside-the-park home run. Statistically, the play counted as a fielder's choice but the bottom line was that the Bobcats scored two runs to go ahead 4-2 in all the chaos. Â
The Mariners were then retired by Acevedo via a pop up, a strike out and a ground out in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bobcats the 4-2 win.
In game two of the doubleheader, the two teams were scoreless for the first two innings before Coastal Georgia took the lead with a run in the third inning. CCG then added three more runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The Bobcats responded with two runs in the top of the fifth as Grafals hit a 2-RBI single to score
Emily Santos and Murch. STU however was unable to generate any more runs in the final two innings as the two teams settled for a split in the conference doubleheader.
St. Thomas returns to action with a doubleheader vs. conference rival Ave Maria on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Col. Jacquelin J. Kelly Field.
