MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. - No. 9 St. Thomas University (20-3, 5-1 TSC) defeated Stratford (7-10) by a score of 13-2 on Wednesday night at Paul Demie Mainieri Field to continue their hot streak during Spring break. The win would push the Bobcats win streak to seven in a row. The victory pushed the Bobcats' win streak to seven in a row.
Ramid Alvaez (1-0) made his first career college start at St. Thomas, pitching five innings, racking up six strikeouts, allowing two hits and only one run. Alvarez was able to earn his first win of his collegiate career in the outing as well. Ruben Ramos, Eddie Escribano, Miguel Rodriguez, and Erne Valdes all pitched in relief for the Bobcats to finish off the game.
The Bobcats offense remained hot as STU produced 13 runs on 15 hits. Erick Delgado went 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and three runs from the leadoff spot for STU. Daniel Lowry also added three hits, going 3-for-6 with a RBI and a run. Nelson Mompierre hit his team leading fifth home run of the season over the right field fence as part of his 2-for-3 night that included a two-run HR and three RBIs. The performance earned Mompierre his third nomination for the prestigious Golden Rake award.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring two runs. The scoring opened on a Lowry RBI single up the middle which brought in Delgado, Lowry would later score on a steal of home as the Cardinals pitcher attempted to pick off Chris Garabedian. The St. Thomas offense would erupt with a seven run outburst in the third inning to put the game out of reach Stratford, as the Bobcats would bat around on the strength of six hits. STU would add two more runs on Mompierre's two-run home run which also brought in Sergio Lopez.
St. Thomas is back in action on Thursday, March 8th as the Bobcats wrap up their "Spring Rake" slate of games with a match-up against NCAA DII Wilimington University at Paul Demie Mainieri Field, first pitch at 6 p.m.
