STU WRAPS UP PLAY AT ROYALS CLASSIC

LAKE WALES, Fla. – The St. Thomas University Volleyball team (1-6) wrapped up their play in the Royal's Labor Day Classic on the campus of Warner University with a match against the Trinity International University Trojans (5-2) and lost in straight sets (15-25, 18-25, 13-25) on Saturday morning.

Following a double-match day yesterday, the Bobcats were scheduled as the first game of the day and started at 9 a.m. The Bobcats rallied to overcome an early 5-2 deficit with two services aces from Lucia Alvarez in the first set. A quick run by the Trojans with service aces by TIU and return errors by STU saw the lead extend to 13-7 over the Bobcats which led to a timeout by Coach Skelton. The Bobcats later trailed in the set by 10 points before recording five of the next seven points to lose the set 25-15.

With the Bobcats trailing 1-0 in sets, the team looked to overcome the early adversity and compete for the second set win. Through the first 26 points of the set, neither team was able to create much separation from their opponents as the score was deadlocked at 13-13 before the Trojans rallied for five consecutive points and that was enough to keep the Bobcats at bay. Trinity International went on to win the set 25-18.

In the third set of the match, the Bobcats were looking to generate some momentum for themselves. STU was tied with TIU at 7-7 before the match got away from the club and lost 25-13.

Leaders for St. Thomas in the match were Nathaly Alvarez with eight kills, Lucia Alvarez with 11 assists as well as three service aces and Courtney White who registered another block.

Up next, St. Thomas opens up Sun Conference play as the defending regular season champs take on Southeastern University on Saturday, September 8th from Lakeland, Fla. at 2 p.m.
