STU SWEEPS WAY TO CONFERENCE WINNING STREAK

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The St. Thomas University Bobcats Volleyball team (4-7, 3-1 TSC) claimed their third straight victory in Sun Conference play with a three-set sweep over the Ave Maria University Gyrenes on Wednesday night from the Fernandez Family Center.

The first set of the match was dominated from the start by the Bobcats as the team opened up a 11-5 lead which forced the Gyrenes to call their first timeout of the set, after four straight points by STU. Following the timeout call, St. Thomas was able to win seven of the next nine points to build up to an 18-9 lead over Ave Maria. St. Thomas cruised to the first set victory by a score of 25-16.

The second set of the match was the exact opposite of the first, in a back-and-forth effort between the two teams. AMU had their biggest lead of the night at two points, when the score was 10-12. The Bobcats clawed their way back and the ultimately took a 20-17 lead, following three straight errors by Gyrene hitters. STU completed the set victory with a score of 25-18, off three-straight service aces by reigning Sun Conference Attacker-of-the-Week, Krista Kolbinskie.

The third and final set of the night was reminiscent of the first, which saw the Bobcats jumping to a 13-6 lead over the Gyrenes before Ave Maria called another timeout. STU was able to build a near insurmountable lead when the score sat at 18-8. Once again STU was able to coast to a third set victory, as Lucia Alvarez closed the set with back-to-back service aces to finish the set by a score of 25-14 to start their first winning streak of the season.
