STU LOSES NON-CONFERENCE BATTLE

HIALEAH, Fla. – The St. Thomas University Volleyball team (5-8) suffered a three-set sweep at the hands of cross-town opponent, Florida National University (9-8) (25-27, 22-25 and 21-25) on Wednesday night at Bucky Dent Gymnasium.

FNU opened the first set with five unanswered points, including back-to-back service aces to pad the lead. St. Thomas came back to force a tie at 10-10, the first of 11 ties in the opening set. The Bobcats forced extra points in the first set against the Conquistadors as they dropped the set by a score of 27-25.

STU opened up the second set with an 8-2 run, which featured three straight service aces from Sophia Adorno before FNU called their first timeout. The Bobcats opened up a 19-13 lead over the Conquistadors before FNU rallied for five consecutive points to cut the STU lead to one point. Florida National closed the set with another run of three consecutive points to take the victory over St. Thomas at 22-25.

The third and final set of the match featured another close set as the clubs were unable to generate much separation between themselves as the largest lead was only a slight three-point advantage. FNU closed out the set and the match with a 25-21 victory.

St. Thomas will resume conference play against Warner University on Saturday, September 29th from Lake Wales with the match starting at 2 p.m. The Bobcats will look to extend their four-game Sun Conference winning streak against the Royals.
