MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 7
th, 2019) – St. Thomas University's Men's Basketball team (10-13, 9-6 TSC) completed the upset victory over 16
th-ranked, Warner University (19-8, 12-3 TSC) with a 73-70 win on Thursday evening from the Fernandez Family Center in the Sun Conference Game of the Week.
STU has won three consecutive Sun Conference games to move into the thick of the race for the Sun Conference tournament. The Bobcats were in sixth place heading into Thursday night's TSC action.
Game Notes
- STU opened an early 9-2 lead over the 16th-ranked Royals, as Philip Saunders and Antoine Joe began the game by making three consecutive three-point buckets.
- After four minutes of play, St. Thomas opened a 10-point advantage, following another Saunders three-pointer.
- Joe maintained the Bobcat lead with yet another three-pointer to put STU up 29-19 with twn minutes remaining in the first half.
- #16 Warner cut the St. Thomas lead to just two points, 31-29, before the Bobcats rattled off an 11-0 run to take control of the first half, as Adam McNeil added four points in the run.
- STU went into the halftime break leading WU, 42-34, following an efficient first half of play.
- The Bobcats kept the pressure on the Royals into the second half, as a quick Daejour Adderley bucket put STU up 44-35.
- With twelve minutes remaining in the game, STU and WU each traded three point buckets as Adderley made his first to put St. Thomas up 55-49.
- Warner brough the lead to one point moments later, before Joe maintained his hot hand from beyond the arc and knocked in another three-pointer to put STU up 58-54 with 11:11 remaining.
- With five minutes remaining in the game, the Bobcats maintained a 67-63 lead in hopes of the upset victory.
- Kheron Millwood carried the Bobcats over the final minutes, scoring four points including the go-ahead bucket as a free throw to put STU up 68-67.
- Joe sealed the upset by giving St. Thomas a four-point advantage, 71-67, with less than a minute remaining.
- Warner made another three-pointer to bring the deficit to one, before Millwood made the final two free throws to ice the 73-70 win.
*STU trailed the #16 Warner University Royals for only :31 seconds in the upset victory in the Sun Conference Game of the Week.
