STU SPLITS TSC OPENER AGAINST CCG

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (March 14th, 2019) – St. Thomas University Bobcats Softball team (15-5, 1-1 TSC) split the Sun Conference opening doubleheader against the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners (11-10, 1-1 TSC) losing game one 7-6 and bouncing back to win game two, 2-1, on Thursday night from Colonel Kelly Field.

Game One Notes
  • Jennifer Acevedo started the Sun Conference opener for the Bobcats, lasting just 2.2 innings, while allowing just two earned runs.
  • CCG scored their first run of the game in the first inning, capitalizing on an error by the Bobcats.
  • The Mariners added two runs in the third inning, chasing Acevedo from the game, as STU brought in Kaitlin Spalding. Spalding allowed an inherited runner to score as CCG led 4-0.
  • In the bottom half of the third inning, St. Thomas scored three runs to respond to Coastal Georgia, cutting the lead to 4-3.
  • McKenna Delaware brought in Manieri on a single to centerfield; Ehrenthal followed with another single to center, plating Delaware and Emily Santos capped off the rally with a single, plating Ehrenthal.
  • STU tied the game in the fifth inning on a Sands single to centerfield, bringing in Grafals, making the score 4-4.
  • In the sixth inning, the Bobcats took their first lead of the contest, as Grafals singled to centerfield, plating Santos, making the score 5-4 in favor of the Bobcats.
  • St. Thomas struggled to close the game, in the top of the seventh, as CCG scored three runs in the inning off of Spalding to reclaim the lead.
  • E. Santos scored on a passed ball, trimming the deficit to one run, but STU fell in the Sun Conference opener, 7-6.

  • Acevedo returned to the mound in game two of the doubleheader, pitching a complete game one-run performance to lead STU to the Sun Conference split, to earn her seventh win of the season
  • St. Thomas scored both runs in the bottom of the fifth inning; First, on a bunt single by GiGi Santos, as Grafals scored on a throwing error by the third baseman and Sands followed with a single to center bringing in Santos.
  • Acevedo finished the CG with two strikeouts in the seventh inning and the Bobcats won on a lineout to Sands at shortstop.
