#6 BOBCATS DEFEAT REIGNING CHAMPIONS IN GAME ONE OF NAIA WORLD SERIES

LEWISTON, ID. (May 24th, 2019) – Sixth-seeded St. Thomas University (46-13) defeated third-seeded Southeastern University (51-11) in game three of the Avista NAIA World Series, in dramatic fashion, 3-2 on Friday evening from Harris Field.

For the first time in program history and the seven appearances in the World Series, St. Thomas won on Opening Night in Lewiston, defeating the reigning National Champions and Sun Conference rivals.
St. Thomas now leads the season series, 4-1, over Southeastern and have outscored them 38-22 in five games, including two postseason games.

GAME NOTES
  • Orlando Rodriguez made the start for St. Thomas, returning to the mound at Harris Field, and pitched the best game of the season and best game of his career for the Bobcats.
    • Rodriguez lasted all nine innings, striking out a season-high 13, allowing two earned runs.
    • As part of his thirteen strikeouts, Rodriguez recorded his 100 strikeouts for the second consecutive season with his eighth of the game.
  • SEU scored the first run of the game, in the bottom of the first inning, on a wild pitch to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Bobcats recorded their first hit of the World Series in the top of the sixth inning with an Erick Delgado single to right field.
  • The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning, before extending their lead to 2-0 with a solo home run.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, with one out, Gus Guerra singled past second base to put a runner on first base for the top of the lineup and Jackie Urbaez.
  • Urbaez, with the count at 1-1, golfed a change-up from the Southeastern ace deep into the night, tying the game at 2-2 with yet another clutch home run this postseason.
  • Rodriguez recorded two more strikeouts, in the bottom of the eighth, maintaining the STU momentum and sending the game into the ninth inning, deadlocked at 2-2.
  • With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Jack Diaz worked a four-pitch walk and was pinch-ran for by Chris Allende, as the go-ahead run.
  • Allende stole second base, setting up the winning run in scoring position and the most important stolen base in St. Thomas history for Daniel Mondejar.
  • Mondejar singled through the right side, scoring Allende from second base, giving STU their first lead in the top of the ninth inning.
  • Rodriguez went back out for the ninth inning, recording two more strikeouts, of his thirteen and finishing the complete game effort and solidifying the Bobcats 3-2 win over the Fire.
