BOBCATS LOSE TSC OPENER

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (September 11, 2019) – St. Thomas University Volleyball (3-6, 0-1 TSC) lost in the 2019 Sun Conference opener to crosstown rival, Florida Memorial University (5-4, 1-0) in four sets (25-20, 19-25, 21-25 and 17-25) from the FMU Wellness Center on Wednesday evening.

Game Notes
  • Anja Vavan made her St. Thomas University debut, starting at libero for the Bobcats. Vavan recorded a service ace to push the lead to 6-1, in favor of STU, in the first set.
  • Following a FMU timeout, the Lions recorded four-of-five points, before consecutive attacking errors gave STU a 9-5 advantage.
  • Back-to-back kills from Amanda Allende and Ty Chenault, followed by a Lion error, pushed the lead to 12-7.
  • Florida Memorial, later in the set, rallied for four consecutive points to cut the STU lead to 20-17.
  • An emphatic kill from Chenault, coupled with two FMU errors, gave St. Thomas their biggest lead of the match at 23-17.
  • Taylor Turner added a kill to put the Bobcats on the brink of the first set with, 24-17.
  • STU closed the set with a victory, taking a 1-0 advantage into the break.
  • A back-and-forth second set, saw the score deadlocked at 10-10, before a four-point rally by FMU gave the Lions a 10-14 lead.
  • St. Thomas could not get within three points, dropping the set 19-25.
  • The Bobcats fell behind due to an 8-0 run by FMU in the third set and could not recover, losing 21-25.
  • Errors were the undoing of the Bobcats in the fourth and final set, as St. Thomas dropped set and match following a 17-25 defeat.

St. Thomas returns to the friendly confines of the Fernandez Family Center to take on Southeastern University (Fla.) in a Sun Conference match-up on Saturday, September 14 with the match scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
