BOBCATS LOSE SEASON-OPENING DOUBLEHEADER

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 31, 2020) - St. Thomas University (STU) Softball (0-2) began their season losing both games of a doubleheader to Florida National University (2-0) on Friday evening from Colonel Jacquelin J. Kelly Field.

Game One
Bobcat Starters
Sophia Negron (Left Field), Juliana Uribe (Center Field), Ashley Rosado (Third Base), Dana Defalco (Designated Hitter), Tyenna Colon (Shortstop), Rachel Samaniego (First Base), Eliza Artiles (Second Base), Dayma Pla (Catcher), Erica Winter (Starting Pitcher)

Game Notes
  • In the opening game of the doubleheader and season, St. Thomas gave the ball to redshirt senior, Erica Winter, to start the game. 
  • Negron dove and made a spectacular play, ending the top of the first inning by turning a double play, as STU looked to bring momentum to the offensive side of the ball.
  • Florida National claimed their first lead of the game, scoring on a throwing error, following a stolen base.
  • The Conquistadors added another run in the top of the fourth inning, with an RBI groundout to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Uribe became the first Bobcat to reach first base, in the bottom of the fourth inning, on a hit-by-pitch to end the FNU perfect game attempt.
  • FNU added another run with a solo home run in the top of the fifth, extending their lead to 3-0.
  • Colon ended the no-hit attempt, singling to left field, beginning the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Lucia Esposito entered the game as a pinch-hitter and got STU on the board, singling to right field to drive in Artiles.
  • Florida National added two more runs, on a two-run double, as the Conquistadors now lead 5-1.
  • STU went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, losing the season opener, 5-1.

Game Notes
  • Rosado began the game on the mound for STU, sending the Conquistadors down in order in the top of the first inning.
  • The Bobcats wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game two, Uribe reached on a single to left-field and promptly stole second base.
  • Colon came up third for STU and crushed an RBI double to the left-center field gap, bringing in Uribe.
  • FNU led off the top of the second inning with a solo home run, tying the game 1-1.
  • The game remained tied 1-1 until the top of the fourth inning; the Conquistadors scored two more on a two-run home run to take a 3-1 advantage.
  • The Bobcats responded with a four-run bottom of the fourth inning; Esposito doubled to left-center, bringing in Artiles and Defalco to tie the game; Descheene singled to score Esposito, and Uribe singled to bring in Campos, giving St. Thomas a 5-3 lead.
  • Florida National battled for a four-run inning of their own, as two consecutive two-out hits led to two-runs and the go-ahead run scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Artiles cut the deficit in half, bringing in Rosado with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • FNU scored three more runs, two in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to extend their lead to 10-6. 
  • St. Thomas went down 1-2-3 in the seventh, losing game two of the doubleheader, 10-6.

The Bobcats will look for revenge in a rematch doubleheader against Florida National on Tuesday, February 11, first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
