STU FALLS IN LAST SECOND ON SEASON OPENER

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (November 7, 2020) - St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Basketball (0-1) was defeated 89-87 by Florida National University (1-2) in the season opener on Saturday evening from the Fernandez Family Center.

Game Notes

  • STU began the game, and the season, on a 5-0 run, as Jones made a layup and Pace knocked down a three-pointer.
  • The Conquistadors responded to Pace's three with a three-pointer of their own, getting on the scoreboard.
  • FNU sank consecutive threes, but Pace added back-to-back three-point buckets oh his own, cutting the Florida National lead to 14-13.
  • Richmond added a three-point make of his own to give STU a shortlived 16-14 advantage.
  • Dwayne Russel scored the first bucket of his Bobcat career, reclaiming the lead for St. Thomas, 20-19.
  • An alley-oop by Floyd, from Joe, put STU ahead 24-22 with 12-minutes remaining in the first half.
  • With five minutes left in the first half, the game was tied 33-33.
  • Daniel Colter Jr. responded to an FNU three-pointer with his first collegiate points, tying the game again at 36-36.
  • Joe closed the first half with back-to-back threes to send the game into the break at 51-45.
  • Florida National opened the second half on a 16-2 run, taking a 61-53 lead over STU.
  • Floyd capped a 9-2 run for the Bobcats with his second dunk of the game to bring St. Thomas within one, 63-62.
  • Trailing by as many as eight points in the second half, Richmond tied the game at 85-85 with a layup with 1:17 remaining. 
  • Floyd tied the game once again at 87-87 with 14-seconds remaining, but FNU closed the game with a last-second layup and won the game, 89-97.
