SOTO EARNS FIRST WIN AS #2 BOBCATS BEAT GYRENES

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 18, 2020) - No. 2 St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats baseball (9-2) beat Ave Maria University (5-9) 6-3 in a non-conference game on Tuesday night from Paul Demie Mainieri Field.

Game Notes
  • Justin Kenyon made his collegiate debut for St. Thomas, lasting three innings. Kenyon's threw two shutout innings to begin his STU career.
  • The Bobcats got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three runs.
  • Estevez brought in Fernandez on a sacrifice fly and Thompson doubled down the left-field line to bring in two as the Bobcats took a 3-0 lead.
  • AMU wasted little time tying the game, responding with a three-run top of the third inning, as the Gyrenes capitalized off an STU error.
  • Felipe Soto entered the game for St. Thomas to begin the fourth inning, registering three strikeouts and working around a two-out single.
  • The score remained tied until the bottom of the fourth inning. The Bobcats added the go-ahead run following a Thompson RBI groundout, as STU reclaimed the lead, 4-3.
  • Joel Rivero relieved Soto in the top of the sixth inning, and lasted until the eighth inning.
  • STU added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Rivero drove in Thompson with an RBI single.
  • Sawyer Losey made his return to the mound for St. Thomas, recording the final two outs in the top of the eighth inning.
  • Khawly scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth inning, extending the Bobcats lead to 6-3.
  • Perez Nichols recorded his first save of the season, preserving the win for the Bobcats, 6-3.
