WINTER AND MARTIN LEAD BOBCATS TO FIRST WINS OF SEASON

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 21, 2020) - St. Thomas University (STU) Softball (2-6) earned their first two wins of the season, sweeping a doubleheader against Trinity Baptist College (1-9) winning both games in run-rule fashion, 9-0 and 11-3.

Game One

Game Notes
  • Winter opened the game by setting the Eagles down in order, setting up the offense with a chance to score early.
  • Colon approached the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the first inning and drove in Artiles and Samaniego with a two-run single, giving STU a 2-0 lead.
  • Winter recorded 3-of-5 strikeouts in the top of the second inning, striking out the side while working around a single and an error.
  • STU broke the game open in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs.
  • Cundiff brought in three runs with a bases-clearing triple, putting the Bobcats in front 5-0.
  • McDade followed the Cundiff triple with an RBI single, extending the lead to 6-0.
  • Winter tallied another 1-2-3 inning on the mound, adding her fourth strikeout of the game in the third inning.
  • Uribe came around to score the seventh run of the game for STU, scoring on a Pla sacrifice fly.
  • TBC threatened to get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning; Winter worked around a leadoff triple and escaped the inning with her final strikeout.
  • Samaniego and Cundiff scored two more runs for STU in the bottom of the fourth, extending the lead to 9-0.
  • Winter polished off her second consecutive, complete game and picked up her first win of the season for the Bobcats.

Game Notes
  • Smits made her first start of the season for St. Thomas, not allowing a hit in her first inning.
  • STU jumped out to an early lead once again, as Hauck scored on an Eagles error.
  • Martin notched her second hit of the game, driving in two runs on an RBI triple, extending the lead to 3-0.
  • Smits ended the third inning with back-to-back strikeouts, preserving the 3-0 lead for the Bobcats.
  • Campos doubled in Rosado in the third inning, and scored on a Martin RBI single, putting the lead at 5-0.
  • Williams lined a single to center-field, bringing in Martin, capping off a three-run inning, as STU led 6-0.
  • After allowing a run, Smits was relieved by Katie Spalding, in the top of the fourth inning,
  • Spalding ended the inning by recording the final two outs, maintaining the 6-1 lead.
  • Spalding allowed two-runs in the top of the fifth inning and the Bobcats turned to Abbigail Smith.
  • Smith forced a double play, ending the threat, as STU led 6-3.
  • Pla drove in Martin and Campos in the bottom of the fifth, extending the lead to 8-3.
  • Pla scored on a wild pitch and Cundiff drove in Urive with an RBI single.
  • Martin ended her perfect day at the plate, driving in Rosado as the Bobcats completed their second run-rule victory of the evening, 11-3.
