STU FALLS IN EXTRA INNING THRILLER TO SPLIT DAY THREE OF THE SPRING GAMES

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 1, 2020) – The St. Thomas University Softball team (4-9, 0-0 TSC) split their final day at THE PFX Spring Games on Sunday from the Fortune Road Athletic Complex. The Bobcats won the day three opener against the University of Michigan-Dearborn with a final score of 1-0. They would then fall in a hard-fought extra inning battle against the University of Northwestern Ohio, 7-8.

Game One Notes:
  • Winter got her sixth start on the year and recorded her second win on the season throwing her third complete game.
  •  STU scored in the bottom half of the first to get an early 1-0 lead.
  • Artiles reached on a bunt base hit that just stayed fair down the first base line.
  • As Samaniego worked the count, Artiles stole back-to-back bases putting herself into scoring position.
  • Colon would the deliver the base hit through the 5/6 hole that brought home the sole run of the ball game.
  • Winter would go on to retire 10-straight Dearborn hitters.
  • UM-Dearborn would get three straight bunt singles to load the bases in the top of the fifth with no outs.
  • A big-time double play from Tyenna Colon, who snagged a line drive and doubled up the runner at third base, shifted the momentum back to the Bobcats.
  • Erica Winter would then shut the door and strike out the pinch hitter to shut down the fifth inning threat and leave two stranded.
  • Good defense and pitching would be enough to secure the win for STU.

Game Two Notes:
  • Winter got her second straight start and fourth of the Spring Games for the Bobcats. Throwing two innings giving up one hit and one earned run.
  • Fundamental softball would get UNOH on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • STU would come back and tie the game in the top of the third as Schmitz led off the inning with a single up the middle.
  • Samaniego would then come to the plate and deliver a two-out single up the middle to bring home Schmitz making the score 1-1.
  • Abbigail Smith came into relief for the Bobcats to start off the top of the third.
  • Northwestern Ohio would rally three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to regain the lead, 4-1.
  • A relentless St. Thomas team battled in the top of the fourth to cut the Racers lead in half, 4-2.
  • Back-to-back base hits from McDade and Martin gets the rally stared.
  • Hauck loaded the bases with an infield single, showing off the speed.
  • Schmitz would deliver with a sacrifice fly to bring home McDade.
  • A silent fifth and sixth innings set up the comeback in the top of the seventh for the Bobcats.
  • Samaniego would get on for the third straight time with an infield single to start the late rally.
  • Colon then came up and got an infield single of her own to put two ducks on the pond.
  • A wild pitch from the Racers put the runners into scoring position.
  • Kally Martin executed a perfect squeeze bunt to bring home Samaniego and move Colon over to third.
  • Ashley Rosado came into her at bat hitless, making the game-tying RBI single to left field that much sweeter.
  • Kaitlin Spalding would come into relief in the bottom of the seventh inheriting a runner on first with one out.
  • Spalding would retire both batters getting help from the outfielders.
  • The blank inning in the bottom of the seventh who be enough for STU to ride the momentum that was in their favor.
  • The dugout energy led by Dana DeFalco and Juliana Uribe gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth.
  • With the Texas tiebreaker in effect, Nicole Hauck started the inning on second base and stole her way to third to put herself 60-feet away.
  • Schmitz would then reach on an error from the shortstop and make find her way to second from a defensive indifference.
  • The stage was set for Dayma Pla, the delivery was perfectly executed as Pla hit a shot to the right center gap that had the centerfielder miss the diving grab by a hair.
  • Hauck and Schmitz score on the hit and Pla would get caught in the rundown but successfully deliver the long two-RBI single.
  • The Racers would make a two-out rally that tied the game back up and send it to the ninth.
  • The fight continued from STU as Uribe came in to pinch run for McDade and was placed on second base.
  • Martin would come up big once again with a sacrifice bunt to out Uribe 60-feet away.
  • Rosado came up in the clutch and delivered a line drive to centerfield which would be enough for the speedy Uribe who scored easily from third to give STU the lead once again.
  • St. Thomas would get a quick two-outs and were a breath away from a thrilling comeback victory, but their breath would be taken away as the ball grazed over the left field fence and Northern Ohio would walk-off and end the battle.

  • Rachael Samaniego: 3-for-4, run, RBI, base-on-balls
  • Tyenna Colon: 2-for-4, run, base-on-balls
  • Dayma Pla and Ashley Rosado: one-hit each, one to tie and one to take the lead, and both collect two runs-batted-in.
  • This is the most hits in a game (14) this season and most since (3/8/2018) vs. San Diego Christian.
 
Upcoming:
The Bobcats return to 'The Colonel' on Saturday afternoon to begin conference play against the visiting Fire of Southeastern University, game times scheduled for 1/3pm.
