MIAMI, Fla. (September 25, 2020) - St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Soccer travels to Ave Maria on Saturday, September 26, to take on the Gyrenes in the Sun Conference Game of the Week. STU and AMU are both undefeated in league play on the season.
St. Thomas (2-1) has opened the 2020 season with consecutive wins in Sun Conference action, defeating the Webber International Warriors and the Florida Memorial Lions. The Bobcats defense has carried the club in the early part of the season, earning back-to-back shutouts, dating back to the season-opener on September 14, Bobcat goalkeepers,
Franco Acerbi and
Josh Womack, have held opposing offenses shutout for 175-minutes.
In the Bobcats win over Florida Memorial,
George Koutsopodiotis scored his first career goal in the second half against the Lions. Koutsopodiotis is tied with
Felipe Madero, and
Fernando Arenzo for the team lead in goals, through three matches.
Ave Maria (2-1) enters the Sun Conference Game of the Week with both Gyrene victories coming against Florida Memorial, including AMU's lone conference win of the season. In the season opener, Ave Maria defeated FMU 1-0 and then defeated the Lions 5-1 to kick-off Sun Conference play on September 19.
Luis Ortiz leads the Ave Maria offensive-unit, scoring two goals in the first three matches of the campaign. In net, Carlos Contreras has recorded both victories for AMU, notching two saves on the season. As a team, the Gyremes have scored seven goals with 23 shots-on-goal.
Historically, the Bobcats have owned the head-to-head match-ups against the Gyrenes, with an 11-1-1 record since 2009. The last time these clubs met on the pitch, STU defeated AMU, 7-2 from Bobcat Field on October 2, 2019.
