MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (November 20, 2021) - The fifth ranked St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Soccer team (14-1-2) suffers their first lost of the season in the NAIA Opening Round Miami Gardens Bracket Championship Game in overtime. The Bobcats fell 3-2 to the no. 25 Ottawa University Arizona Spirit. This concludes yet another historic season for STU Futbol.
St. Thomas got on the board first as Felipe Madero found the back of the net in the 13th minute to take the early 1-0 lead. Fernando Arzeno would score his team leading 14th goal of the season in the 38th minute to give STU a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
Ottawa would show adversity and resilience in the second half scoring on back to back plays in the 50th minute if the match to tie it all up at two. These two goals would be enough to send the match to overtime.
With the golden goal in effect, the first goal would end the match. Ottawa continued their momentum and struck the game winner in the 94th minute.Â
This would conclude the historic run for St. Thomas Futbol who achieved the highest ranking in program history, repeated as Sun Conference Tournament Champions, won the Sun Conference Regular Season title and went undefeated through the regular season for the second time in Program history.
