(RV) BOBCATS CLINCH REGULAR SEASON TITLE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2017

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (November 6, 2021) – The receiving votes St. Thomas University (STU) Volleyball team (21-6, 12-2 SUN) defeated Southeastern University (21-13, 7-7 SUN) 3-1 on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. St. Thomas now rides an eight-game winning streak to head into the Sun Conference Tournament. With the win over Southeastern, the Bobcats clinched the regular season title for the first time since 2017, when Head Coach Whitney Battoe won it as a senior.
 
Match Notes
  • The Bobcats opened the match on an 8-2 run that forced a Fire timeout.
  • Southeastern immediately bounced back to go on a 5-0 run following the timeout to tie the match up at eight.
  • After a little back-and-forth, Stu went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 21-11 lead in the first set.
  • Loreto Nunez-Casal recorded the last kill of the set to give STU a 1-0 match lead.
  • SEU flipped it around in the second set with a 7-2 start.
  • St. Thomas would slowly but surely put together runs of three of more to play catch up for every Southeastern point.
  • Kelly Rosario found her way to the court again and finished out the second set in service for three straight points for STU and recording an ace.
  • Set three went in favor of the Fire as teem hit .239 and held STU to a .125 hitting average.
  • The Bobcats bounced back after set three to win set four 25-23 and take the match 3-1.
  • Eight seniors were celebrated, Kendall Brock, Tyran Chenault, Kelly Rosario, Arianna Bolinger, Mya Thomas, Mia Thomas, Manuela Martinez, and Loreto Nunez-Casal.
 
Box Score Notables
  • Bianca Grassi recorded her 500th dig and is just the second play to do that in one season.
  • Grassi also recorded 30-digs on the afternoon.
  • Arianna Bolinger surpassed her season-high with 16-kills, also collected four service aces and 20 digs, recording a double-double.
  • Amanda Allende led on the scoring side with 17-kills.
  • Nunez-Casal continues to block the line picking up three big stops.
  • The Bobcats only got aced once all game.
 
 
Up Next
St. Thomas will have a first round bye in the Sun Conference Tournament and will also serve as the final four host. Semifinal matchup is set for Friday, November 12 against the Winner of Southeastern and Coastal Georgia.
