BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 13, 2020) - On a rainy February Saturday in Babson Park, history or "'her-story," was made. For the first time, Women's Flag Football was played as a varsity collegiate sport in the "Crooked Lake Kickoff." St. Thomas University played the third and fourth ever varsity Women's Flag Football games and won the first game in program history, defeating Warner University 13-6 on Saturday afternoon.
"It is a tremendous accomplishment for our girls and our program to earn a victory in our first game during our inaugural season," said Head Coach
Erick Burzanko. "The history of today, paired with a win, makes today truly special."
The competing teams in the "Crooked Lake Kickoff" included Midland, Waner University, Webber International University, and St. Thomas. The inaugural Women's Flag Football game pitted Webber International against Midland, in which WIU defeated Midland 52-0.
STU began the season against Warner University, with
Jada Graham at Quarterback for the Bobcats. Graham connected with
Tiffany Walker for the first passing touchdown in program history from eight-yards away to give St. Thomas its first lead in the third quarter. Later in the third, Graham connected with
Kayla Alvarez to provide STU with a 13-6 advantage.
Mayerli Cayon led the STU defense in the inaugural game, recording nine flag pulls and a quarterback sack against the Royals.
Kayla Alvarez added the first interception for St. Thomas while totaling three flag pulls and another pass break-up.
Following the first win in program history, St. Thomas played its second game of the afternoon against Webber International. Once again, Graham added a touchdown, this time in the final two minutes to send the game into overtime.
However, at the end of regulation, the game was called due to darkness and will remain tied until the two teams meet on Saturday, February 27, at Keiser University in West Palm Beach.
STU hosts the first home games in program history on Saturday, February 20. St. Thomas plays Keiser and Florida Memorial starting at 2 p.m.
