COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (May 6, 2021) - Tenth-seed St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Soccer continues its pursuit of the first NAIA National Championship in University this evening against second-seed Oklahoma Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the 62nd annual NAIA National Championship Tournament.
St. Thomas upset the seventh-seed Mid-American Christian University Evangels, 1-0, in the first round on Tuesday evening. In what was a rain-soaked game,
Franco Acerbi earned a clean sheet in the game, recording six saves in the effort.
Felipe Madero scored the game-winning goal late in the second half on a header.Â
The win tied the program record for wins (14) which was set in 2017 and was the last time the Bobcats advanced to the final site of the NAIA National Tournament.Â
Oklahoma Wesleyan (19-2-1) won the KCAC Conference Tournament Championship, defeating McPherson 3-0 on April 17. During the Eagles postseason run, OKWU has defeated opponents 19-2 and has shutout each of its past three opponents.Â
In contrast, STU defeated both Southeastern (2-0) and regular-season Sun Conference Champion Keiser (2-1) to earn the third Sun Conference Tournament title in the past five seasons. During the NAIA Opening Round in Lawrenceville, GA., the Bobcats defeated fifth-ranked Dalton State College, 4-1, and clinched the tournament crown with a 2-1 victory over Milligan University.Â
The Bobcats will kick-off in the quarterfinal round against the Eagles of Oklahoma Wesleyan at 5 p.m. from Blanchard Woods Park.
