Women's Basketball Opens 2022-23 Season With Home Win Versus Virgin Islands

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 27, 2022)- The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team started the season on the right track, beating University of the Virgin Islands 75-53. The Bobcats points were spread pretty even, with Marta Franco leading the team with 20 points.

The game started off fast with the first bucket made by Mya Moye in the first five seconds, but the next points for the Bobcats wouldn't come for another couple minutes. After going down early 7-3, Marta Franco would cut the deficit and score her first as a Bobcat after driving the net and making her free throws. With a Jayde Johnson layup that would tie the game and never trail again in the game.

Marta Franco made the first three of the game for STU taking the lead by three. Brooke Bogatz got on the board after making her way to the line and hitting both free throws. An offensive rebound and put back from Mya Victor, then a fast break three pointer form Bria Brown would lead to the final points in the first quarter for the Bobcats.

The second quarter would be started with a shot behind the arch this time from Kasey Gagan to extend the lead. With little offense from both teams for a couple of minutes, Connieya Bradford would fight in the paint for an offensive rebound and tough layup. Towards the end of the first half Marta Franco would get a steal and march down the court for the layup that got the crowd going. Another free throw from Franco would end the scoring with the Bobcats taking a 45-27 lead into the half.

Connieya Bradford opened up the second half scoring for the Bobcats with a layup in the paint with defenders all around. Kasey Gagan made another three to get to 50 points for STU. Mya Victor was tough in the paint on both ends the whole night which led to a Brooke Bogatz layup to make in 52-36. Marta Franco likes to play fast and scored on another fast break to start pulling away from the Virgin Islands. The last points in the third quarter came by way of a three pointer from Jayde Johnson.

The final quarter of basketball was all Bobcats holding Virgin Islands to just five points. None other than Mya Victor would start the scoring with an offensive rebound and put back. Marta Franco was in the paint once again for the next points, and was able to get the and one layup to take the lead by 20. Damia Woolcock got the final points for STU winning by the score of 75-53.
