MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (November 12, 2022)- The St. Thomas University Men's Basketball team started Sun Conference play with a commanding victory over Florida Memorial, led by Fred Mulbah and Milton Matthews. The Bobcats haven't scored over 100 points against a Conference opponent in over six years. With this win the Bobcats start the season 5-0.
It was a back and forward game at the beginning with the Lions getting out to an early lead. Milton Matthews got going early and wouldn't look back. With Fred Mulbah scoring and dishing it out FMU didn't know who to cover. With eight minutes to go in the first half, STU would trail by the biggest deficit of the game 38-33.
James Harris III checked in and tied the game up by driving to the net and getting fouled a few times. Milton Matthews and Fred Mulbah put in some work and took the lead back for the Bobcats. At the half the Bobcats led the Lions 58-57.
FMU came out quick in the second half and took the lead. Justyn Rogers drove to the paint to take the lead. The second half was much like the first with back and forward, until Fred Mulbah and Milton Matthews took over and the Bobcats started running away with it.
With a season high of 36 points, Fred Mulbah was all over the court with six assists, and six steals. Mulbah went 15-20 on field goals, and 6-9 at the line. Right behind him was Milton Matthews with 35 points. Matthews did what he does best shooting 50% behind the arch, and had a field goal percentage of 59.1%. D'Andre Johnson also had a great day with 12 points. Johnson got it done on both ends, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 1 steal.
STU as a whole shot 38-69 (55.1%), 10-26 from three, went 21-31 at the line, and 37 total rebounds. The Bobcats will face Keiser University at home November 17th in the Fernandez Family Center, for another Sun Conference matchup.
St. Thomas will continue Sun Conference action next week hosting Keiser University on November 17 at 7:30 p.m. from the Fernandez Family Center.
