MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 5, 2022) – The 24
th ranked St. Thomas University Men's Tennis team (1-0, 1-0 SUN) took down 21
st ranked Ave Maria University in commanding fashion to open Sun Conference play on Saturday afternoon from the STU Tennis Courts. The Bobcats took the doubles point and used that moment towards the rest of the match to take it 5-2.
Doubles
The Bobcats got off to a slow start as Ave Maria jumped out to an early lead on each court. The Gyrenes ultimately ended up taking court one early, putting the pressure on courts two and three for STU. St. Thomas rose to the occasion and put together a great comeback as
Tomas Pejanovic and
Jacob Turley set the tone winning court two to make it even.
The doubles point relied on court three's outcome where a thrilling back and forth match landed in favor of the Bobcats as a fired-up crowd help lift
Raul Safont Martinez and Luis Leon to victory taking it 7-6 and giving STU the advantage heading into singles.
Singles
The energy carried over into singles play as the Bobcats took four of the six courts in singles play. St. Thomas fell in courts one and two but took three through six. Safont Martinez won comfortably -1, 6-3.
Alessandro Tabares won in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, and 7-6. Luis Leon handled business taking it 6-2, 6-4.
Jacob Turley closed it out securing the win with a 6-2, 7-6.
