LAKELAND, Fla. (February 26, 2022) - The receiving votes St. Thomas University Women's Tennis team traveled to take on the no. 19 ranked Southeastern University Fire, in a pivotal Sun Conference matchup. Annie Carrera/Maria Camila Puente set the tone with a 6-1 win at court one doubles, while Lia Peña/Carme Ibanez sealed the doubles point with a thrilling 7-6(8) win at court two doubles giving the Bobcats much needed momentum heading into singles.

The Bobcats fell in courts one and two to fall behind 2-1; however, the remainder of the Bobcats pulled off big wins to seal a 5-2 win over the Fire.

The wins began with Carrera at court three with a win of 6-4, 6-3, which was followed by Puente winning at court four 6-4, 6-4. Shortly after, Berghaus clinched the win at court six with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win. To add to the margin of victory Ibanez completed a comeback at court five winning 4-6, 6-2, 10-6, which resulted in the final 5-2 margin of victory.

Coach Roche said, "This was a huge win for our program. We have had some recent adversity with injuries and tight losses to ranked teams. We have been preaching that the doubles point is pivotal towards momentum in a match, and we were finally able to close a doubles point, leading to a ton of momentum heading into singles. The ladies all showed up, supported each other, and remained mentally tough against an extremely solid opponent."
