BOBCATS BATTLE THROUGH TWO ELIMINATION GAMES TO EARN A SPOT IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (May 7, 2022) – The eighth ranked St. Thomas University (STU) Baseball team (38-16) stays alive winning two elimination games to mark their spot in the championship game for the first time since 2018. The Bobcats defeated their two familiar foes of the tournament in Webber International and Keiser to reserve a date with Southeastern as the one and two seeds battle it out for the first time since 2017.

Game_One_Highlights
  • St. Thomas bats were hot from the start as Robin Fernandez bolted a solo shot down the right field like to take the 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • Chris Schoeller added an RBI-double down the left field line that scored Jack Khawly to make it 2-0.
  • Brian Garcia kept the two-out rally going with a single to right field to score Schoeller and open it up to 3-0 in the first.
  • Webber would erase one run in the bottom of the first to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
  • Crosby Bringhurst got the start on the bump for STU.
  • Josue Rangel continued the hit parade in the second inning and collected a two-RBI single to right center to bring home Joey Thompson and Andrew Fernandez who walked their way one and moved on a wild pitch.
  • Khawly then delivered a run of his own to bring in Robin Fernandez.
  • Schoeller topped on the second with a two-run blast to left field to put the game at 8-1.
  • After allowing the run in the first, Bringhurst delivered 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball to keep the game at a healthy lead for his team.
  • Webber International slowly work their way back into the game in the later innings putting up three in the sixth, one in the seventh, and two in the eighth to make it a ball game again at 8-7.
  • Gio Soto came in to shut the door and did so collecting all his outs via the strikeout to pick up the save.

  • Five different Bobcats collected an RBi, Rangel and Schoeller with multiple.
  • Five other Bobcats collected multi-hit games as hitters one through six recorded at least one.
  • Rangel led the way with a three-for-five game and two-RBI.

  • In the second elimination game of the day that started at 9 p.m. due to weather delay, it was Keiser who jumped on the board first.
  • The Seahawks scored the first four runs, as they delivered two-runs in the third and fourth.
  • St. Thomas came back and score four in the fifth to tie it all up.
  • Andrew Fernandez continues to swing the bat and deliver for STU as he singled through the left side to bring home Addiel Quintana.
  • Rangel added another RBI-single to his day to score Thompson to make it 4-2.
  • Robin Fernandez had an RBI-single of his own that brought home courtesy runner Pablo Delgado to put STU within one.
  • In a first and third situation, Fernandez got himself caught in a run down, but not before Rangel would be able to cross the plate and tie the game up at four all.
  • After the fifth inning the two teams would be in a standstill that went late into the night in extra innings.
  • Keiser once again regained the lead in the 11th, a bases loaded double-play brought home a run.
  • Angelo Piloto came in to pinch hit and reached on first with a drop on third strike.
  • Thompson then singled through the right side to gain some momentum back into the STU dugout.
  • A heads up play by the Keiser third baseman caught Quintana at home to keep their 5-4 lead.
  • The Seahawk pitching staff would then deliver back-to-back walks to load it up and tie the game.
  • A chopper to the third baseman from Jack Khawly would be enough for another walk-off victory
  • This is Khawly's second walk-off of the tournament.
  • St. Thomas pitching had another double-digit strikeout total for their 32nd with 15 punch outs.
  • Gio Soto came back again to close out the game and recorded the win.
 
Coming_Up
St. Thomas will now take on first-seeded Southeastern with a start time of 12 p.m. The Bobcats would have to win two in order to gain the conference crown. Southeastern just needs to win one game.
