AVE MARIA, Fla. (September 14, 2022) – Sun Conference league action began on Wednesday night with six teams hitting the court. The St. Thomas University (STU) Volleyball team (4-4, 0-1 SUN) started with the biggest match of the night against Ave Maria University (8-2, 1-0 SUN) on the road. It was a battle of the 2021 regular season champions and the 2021 tournament champions. Ave Maria came out on top in the five set thriller from Donahue Academy taking it three sets to the Bobcats two.Â

- St. Thomas scored the first point of the match on an attack error by Ave Maria.Â
- After a little bit of spacing was created through the first few points, STU was able to stretch it to a seven point lead at 13-6 as kills from Amanda Allende, Mariana Cova, and Tayla Barnes all recorded kills through the stretch.Â
- Ave Maria sparked a 10-3 run that saw the set tied at 17 all.Â
- The Gyrenes would end up taking the lead at 21-19 over STU.Â
- The Bobcats remained resilient and pulled themselves back on top to finish the set on a 5-1 run.Â
- In a match that would go on trading sets, Ave Maria would take sets two, four, and five to the Bobcats one and three.Â
- The defense was on display for both sides as each team collected 16 blocks.Â
- Both teams would bounce back and not let the lead stretch too far throughout the match which led to a fight in each set and ultimately it coming down to all five sets being played.Â
- St. Thomas had four players with double-digit kills (Allende, Cova, Barnes, and Nunez-Casal).Â
- For the past three season the teams have split the season series evenly during conference play.Â
- Amanda Allende topped her season-high just one match later, this time with 19-kills.Â
- Tayla Barnes, the freshmen had quite the debut into conference action for a career-high 12 kills and four blocks.Â
- Mariana Cova also had a career night with 10 kills and three blocks.Â
- Bianca Grassi picks up another 20-plus dog performance with 27.Â
- Mia Thomas led the setters with 31 assist.Â
