MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 21, 2023) - What a day it was in the campus of St. Thomas University. In a jammed pack homecoming slate the Volleyball team did what they did best sweeping the Southeastern Fire on their way to the team's 14th straight victory. This marks the longest win streak in the Battoe era surpassing the previous at 13 that was set last season.
It was a highly anticipated matchup among the Sun Conference best. St. Thomas is currently in first at 10-0 in SUN play as the Fire now fall to 8-2 but remain in second place.Â
The first set was as advertised as the teams both battled back and forth and traded points. STU would take it 25-22.Â
The two sets that followed was pedal to the metal for the Bobcats and the sent it full steam ahead. STU dominated with a 25-11 and 25-14 set victories.Â
STU swung a .324 clips while holding Southeastern to just .049. The defense held the Fire to just five kills in the third set. St. Thomas had nearly double the kills at 45-26, while minimizing the errors to 11 as SEU had 21.
The middle blockers stole the show for the Bobcats as Sana Dennis and Tayla Barnes had a combined 18 kills while both swinging over .550. Amanda Allende had eight kills and three service aces with eight digs to lead the team in points.
Bianca Grassi led in digs with 14 while Payton Bertke had 30 assists with five kills and an ace.Â
STU is now 19-0 while winning the first set and have only dropped four sets at home all year. This is also the 13th sweep of the season.
The Bobcats will hit the road next Wednesday, October 25 to play Ave Maria as they continue their title defense in Sun Conference play.
