LEBANON, Tenn. (November 18, 2023) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Soccer team fell to Cumberland University in the Second Round of the NAIA National Championship on Saturday afternoon. Despite an equalizing goal from
Alexandra Santiago, the Bobcats were unable to pull out the win, concluding their time in the National Tournament.
The Bobcats traveled to Tennessee Thursday afternoon to prepare for their long-awaited match up against Cumberland University. The Phoenix went 16-1-3, losing only to the University of Cumberlands during conference play.Â
The match started off hot, both teams looking to net one. The Phoenix were able to secure a goal in the fifth minute, putting ahead of the Bobcats by one. The Bobcats were quick to respond,
Alexandra Santiago scoring the equalizer for in the 21st minute. The Bobcats continued to play hard, notching 10 shots in the first half and five corner kicks.Â
Just 10 minutes after Santiago's goal, the Phoenix were able to net another goal, putting them in the lead in the 31st minute. The game entered intermission with the scoreboard reading 2-1 with the Phoenix leading.
The Bobcats continued to fight hard in the second half, but they were ultimately unable to net another goal. The match ended with a final score of 2-1 in favor of the Phoenix. The Bobcats end their season with a final record of 13-5-2 and numerous accolades for members of the Bobcat team. This loss eliminates them from the NAIA National Tournament and concludes their season
