Matthews and STU Defeat Midland in First Game of Cruzin' Classic

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (December 17, 2023) – The St. Thomas University Men's Basketball team secured a big win in a hard-fought battle with Midland. The Bobcats were down at the half and a huge effort from Milton Matthews on offense led STU to the victory in their first game of the Cruzin' Classic.
 
In the opening minutes, St. Thomas took an early lead with a good layup by Milton Matthews, assisted by Cearius Warren. However, Midland responded with determined plays, to tie the game at two. The back-and-forth continued, with Midland's Jeffrey Rozelle contributing a three-pointer, while St. Thomas' Matthews showcased his skills with impressive back to back jumpers.
 
As the first half progressed, both teams displayed tenacity on the court. Midland's Jack Cooper made significant contributions, but St. Thomas, led by Matthews and Taylor, maintained a slim lead. The defensive efforts were notable, including blocks and steals on both ends of the court by Warren and Thrower. The halftime score reflected a close contest, but the Bobcats headed into the locker room down with some work to do.
 
The second half began with both teams eager to gain momentum. Midland's Jake Rueschhoff and Ryan Larsen stepped up with crucial plays, while St. Thomas' Matthews continued his sharpshooting, on his way to another big scoring night, but the Bobcats fell to their largest deficit of the night (12 points).
 
The game remained tight, but St. Thomas responded with strong plays from Cearius Warren and Jordan Hernandez. The battle in the paint intensified, with both teams striving for rebounds and second-chance opportunities, but the Bobcats clawed their way back into it.
 
As the clock winded down, St. Thomas managed to extend their lead, thanks to the scoring prowess of Matthews and the solid teamwork displayed by the entire squad. Midland fought hard, but St. Thomas' defense, led by Joshua Thrower, proved resilient. In the closing minutes, St. Thomas secured the victory with key plays, including a crucial three-pointer by Matthews and an impressive dunk by Taylor.
