WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (December 17, 2023) - The. (RV) St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team traveled to West Palm Beach, Fla. On Sunday afternoon to participate in their first game of the West Palm Invitational. The Bobcats faced West Virginia Tech in the match up, and successfully defeated the Golden Bears 63-48.
The opening minutes were marked by a competitive exchange of baskets. Bria Brown led in the opening quarter for the Bobcats, kicking off the game with 5 points. Brooke Bogatz and Marta Franco followed closely behind, notching four points each in quarter one. The Bobcats finished the quarter with an 7-point lead, leading 17-10.
St. Thomas continued their offensive onslaught in the second quarter. Paige McDonald made her presence felt, contributing 4 points, adding to her total of 16 during the game. The Bobcats collectively shot 50% from the field. St. Thomas extended their lead to 12 points, ending the quarter at 39-27.
The Golden Bears mounted a spirited comeback in the third quarter, chipping away at STU's lead. Despite a strong defensive effort from the Bobcats, West Virginia Tech managed to close the gap. The Bobcats held a single-digit lead, finishing the quarter 47-33.
Entering the final quarter, the Golden Bears showed resilience, attempting to stage a late-game comeback. However, St. Thomas University's defense held firm, limiting West Virginia Tech's opportunities. Bogatz continued her stellar performance, securing the victory for the Bobcats. Bogatz showcased her offensive dominance, recording 21 points in the game, including 3 three-pointers. The final score stood at 63-48, with St. Thomas University showcasing a well-rounded performance.
Throughout the game, the Bobcats emphasized teamwork, tallying an impressive 20 assists. Their dominance in the paint, with 32 points, underscored their strategic approach. The Bobcats also capitalized on turnovers, converting them into 27 points, while the Golden Bears managed only 5 in this category. This win brings the Bobcats' record to 7-2 overall this season.
Up next, the Bobcats will face #15 Cumberlands (Ky.) in their second game of the West Palm Invitational. This game will take place on Monday, December 18th at 1:30 p.m. at Keiser University's Student Life Center.
