MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 10, 2023) - Softball is back at Col. Jacquelin J. Kelly Field. The St. Thomas University (STU) Softball team took the diamond for the first time in 2023 at home against Florida National University (0-1). The Bobcat bats had an early awaking to take the single game 9-2.

The first inning had a lead off double from the Conquistadors but the threat would end there as three straight were retired. St. Thomas then came and put up two runs on three hits. 

Gabriella Gilbert recorded the first bad hit that followed with two more. Natalia Kopicova singles right behind and Marla Lavado drove in the first runs with a double down the third-base line. 

The offense did not stop there as the lineup flipped back to the top, the triples queen Sophia Negron delivered her first one to the right center gap on a perfectly executed hit and run. The triple was outshined with the blast off the bat from Gilbert who sent one over the left center fence. This made the lead 6-0.

The defense and pitching had the rest on lock down. With a combined performance from Kaitlyn Spalding, Abbigail Smith (1-0), and Samantha Noriega the pitching staff only allowed two runs and four hits. The defense was perfect with no errors making everything routine.

St. Thomas will now travel to Lynn for a double header in Boca Raton, Fla. on Saturday, February 11 with the first game scheduled for 12 p.m.
