MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 1, 2023) - This is no joke, the no. 17 St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Tennis team (12-6, 3-2 SUN) upset no. 11 College of Coastal Georgia on Saturday afternoon from the STU Tennis Courts. The Bobcats took down the Mariners 4-3 for their third straight Sun Conference victory.
St. Thomas started the match winning another doubles point. Sebastian Mezo and Lucas Ribas picked up their first pair win on court two taking it 6-1. Raul Safont Martinez and Bernardo Tajada closed out the doubles play winning the tie-breaker court on three, 6-4.
Tajada and Safont Martinez continued the momentum into singles play securing the first two points to take a 3-0 lead. Tajada took court two first in straight sets at 6-4 each. Safont Martinez took court one in straight sets, both at 6-2.
Coastal Georgia picked up their first match point on court four as Caio Amaral fell 1-6, 2-6.
The Bobcats clinched the match on court three as Carlos Vidal worked a three set comeback victory. 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
The Mariners took the final two courts to finish the score at 4-3.
St. Thomas will head to New Orleans to take on four NAIA opponents, two in the top-10, starting with no. 8 Xavier.
