Softball Takes Battle of Miami Gardens to End Regular Season PLay

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 29, 2023) – St. Thomas University Softball (33-16, 14-10 SUN) closed out the regular season with a double header on Saturday afternoon at Colonel Jacquelin J. Kelly Field against Florida Memorial University. The Battle of Miami Gardens fell in favor of the Bobcats for the second straight season after a doubleheader split.

St. Thomas fell in game two of the three game regular season finale 5-4. Florida Memorial got out to an early 4-0 lead that the Bobcats had to battle back from. In the bottom of the fourth, STU brought it within one off an error from the short stop that brought home three. The game was tied at four all in the bottom of the sixth after Gabriella Gilbert singled through the left side to bring home Jade Fayad.

Florida Memorial regained the lead in the top of the seventh and held onto it with a three-up three-down bottom half to secure the win.

In the rubber match, St. Thomas scored the first run in the bottom of the first courtesy of a successful squeeze play from Nicky Heisler to score Natalie Kopicova. Florida Memorial had a three run top of the third to take the lead at 3-1. The bottom half erased the deficit as Gilbert sent one over the left field fence for a three-run shot.

St. Thomas extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth with an-RBI single down the left field line from Sarah Descheene. An error from the Lions extended the inning and allowed for the Bobcats to get an insurance run to make it 5-3. The Bobcats took the game 7-3 with a final score.

The Bobcats will now look ahead to the Sun Conference tournament as they are the no. 3 seed.
