NEW ORLEANS, La. (April 5, 2023) - Mark your calendars as the no.11 St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Tennis (16-3, 2-3 SUN) has made history once again. On a very busy trip to Louisiana to take on some of the nation's best, the Bobcats started with a bang taking down no. 4 Xavier University of New Orleans for the biggest upset in program history taking down their first Top-5 opponent. St. Thomas won the match 4-3 on the courts of the Gold Nuggets.
St. Thomas took one of the three double courts, ultimately losing the doubles point. This was a rare way for the Bobcats to start as they usually head into doubles up 1-0.
Heading into singles play, the pressure was on the Bobcats to take four of the six courts to clinch the match. Lia Pena got things started upsetting no. 24 Mbali Langa in straight sets 75, 6-1.
Courts two through four followed in perfect suit to clinch the match point.
Carme Ibanez Navarro took down Tianna Dixon in straight sets winning a tie breaker in set two, 6-4, 7[7]-6[5]. Annie Carrera took court three over Valaine Clarke in a three set thriller, 6-4, 6[5]-7[7], 7-5. Isabella Ciancaglini-Ribera clinched the match on four defeating McKenna Wheatley in a dominant comeback; 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
STU fell on the final two singles courts as Jamison Geoffrey's withdrew due to injury and Jenesie Burgos fell in straight sets 6[2]-7[7], 6-2.
ST. Thomas will continue their trip taking on (RV) Dillard tomorrow in New Orleans.
