MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (September 12, 2023)- The St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Soccer team is set to open up Sun Conference play against the Webber International Warriors tomorrow on the road in Babson Park, Fla. The Bobcats come in ranked #6 in the nation, after going 2-0-1 in their non-conference schedule.
Â
STU has had some tough first few games, scrimmaging two NCAA D2 opponents in NSU and Barry, and three nationally recognized NAIA teams. In the first official game of the season, the Bobcats defeated #21 Florida National who made a run in the playoffs last year. The score was 3-2 in a hard fought game on both sides.
Â
In the second game of the year, STU had arguably one of the hardest games of the year, in facing off against the team who eliminated them from the playoffs last year Lindsey Wilson. The Blue Raiders had a lot of hype surrounding them this year ranked #5, because what they were able to do last season. Head Coach Felix Mats really had his guys set the tone early and take over the match from the very beginning, and walking away with a dominant 3-1 victory.
Â
In the last match up, the (RV) Missouri Baptist Spartans gave the Bobcats some troubles. STU looked just a touch behind in that one, but were able to score a last minute goal and tie the game to avoid the early loss. The Bobcats will be without star defender
Joaquin Domber, and Goal Keeper
Franco Acerbi to open up Conference play.
Â
The Warriors had some tough opponents to start the year as well. They sit 1-2-1 so far, getting a victory over Fort Lauderdale. Their next few games would be very high level teams. Webber lost to #21 Florida National 4-0, tied Rocky Mountain College 3-3, and dropped a game to #8 Georgia Gwinnett 2-0.
